Treatment for alcohol and drug problems has become a major part of mental health services in recent years. Despite the proliferation of empirically grounded treatment approaches, clients with substance abuse disorders face tremendous challenges in altering their patterns of thought and behavior.

This course presents the latest theory and research on the process of addictive behavior change assisting the clinician to more effectively conceptualize and address the needs of their clients. It offers concrete guidance for tailoring interventions to clients with varying levels of motivation or readiness to change, it describes what does work, and what doesn’t work at different points in the recovery process.

The course reviews each of the five stages of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance and illustrates the specific clinical issues and tasks that arise for the client and therapist at each stage. The course identifies interventions and techniques that are most effective for meeting the challenges of each stage. All aspects of addiction treatment are covered, from assessments to intervention and relapse management.

This course offers indispensable guidance on applying the stages of change model to clinical practice. It is a resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, family therapists, addiction counselors, corrections, criminal justice counselors, and sex offender treatment specialists.
