Course Description

The primary focus of this course and text is on criminal violence of both mentally ill offenders and criminal inmates whose histories of criminal violence raises serious societal concerns about the commission of future acts of violence.

This course comprehensively discusses the proper balance between an offender's civil liberties and public safety. The balance between the two requires an accurate assessment by trained mental health professionals of the likelihood that an individual will commit a new violent or sexual offense. This course and text explores the use and scoring of both the Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG)  which is currently the most accurate actuarial risk appraisal instrument that is available, as well as the Sex Offender Risk Appraisal Guide (SORAG) both instruments are contained in the appendix of the course text. The course text also provides a manual in the appendix for the compilation of a Psychosocial History suitable for risk appraisal as well as a detailed example Psychosocial History suitable for scoring the VRAG and SORAG. The manual discusses proper risk appraisal reports and within the appendix provides an Example of a Violence Risk Appraisal Report. Also discussed and provided are the Problem Identification Checklist.
